The Many Benefits of Nutritional Yeast and Buckwheat in Grain Burgers

Veggie and grain burgers are becoming a real hit. Besides their exceptional taste and the fact that they are relatively easy to prepare, most people are fond of this special type of burger due to its nutritional value. They include different ingredients, but the two most unusual ones in this recipe are buckwheat and nutritional yeast. Now let’s analyze why these ingredients are so important.

Health benefits of buckwheat

In case you didn’t know, buckwheat is actually a seed from the rhubarb family that contains proteins, complex carbohydrates, fiber and minerals. It is also wheat and gluten free despite its name. Consumption of buckwheat on a regular basis can help stabilize blood pressure. Buckwheat is packed with flavonoids, which support the activity of vitamin C and antioxidants in the body.

Another important health benefit of buckwheat consumption is reducing risk of diabetes. Several scientific studies have shown that this food is high in magnesium, an essential mineral that can protect us from diabetes. Magnesium also manages the production of insulin and how and when the body uses glucose. Furthermore, buckwheat is rich in insoluble fiber, which means that it can lower the chances of developing gallstones and decrease the level of fats or cholesterol in the blood stream. Its fiber content can also help prevent cancer.  Finally, there is enough evidence to claim that buckwheat offers protection against developing asthma in children due to its Vitamin E and magnesium. Consider that buckwheat provides better nutrition compared to vegetables and fruits. One cup of buckwheat contains 0.25 mg of copper, 117 mg of phosphorus, 0.70 mg of manganese, 5 grams of dietary fiber, 6 grams of protein and 85 grams of magnesium.

What is nutritional yeast? What are its health benefits?

Nutritional yeast is a type of inactive non-pathogenic yeast that comes in a bright yellow color. You can find it in a health food stores in the form of powder or flakes. The process of creating nutritional yeast is simple – the yeast is cultured with a mixture that consists of sugarcane and beet molasses. One of the things that make nutritional yeast so popular is the distinctive delicious cheesy flavor. Of course, another reason why people use this yeast in the Grain Burgers and other recipes is the fact that it contains many different nutrients good for the health.

To start with, nutritional yeast provides antibacterial and antiviral effects. This is the reason why many people use it in cases of chronic candida, salmonella, and E.coli. Furthermore, nutritional yeast boosts digestion and helps people suffering from loss of appetite and diarrhea. This yeast is packed with probiotics and this is the reason why it is so effective. Finally, nutritional yeast is a natural immune system booster. The high amounts of trehalose, beta-1,3 glucan, and glutathione help people improve the work of their immune system. We should point out that unfortified nutritional yeast has more iron than the fortified variety. We always have some nutritional yeast in our kitchen pantry.
