Jump to recipe

We’ve been getting lucky with some unseasonably warm weather. So in case you’re already getting the itch to grill and plan a barbeque, you should know that the success of this activity usually depends on a few different elements including the weather, people and of course – food. There is one thing that can make any barbeque better and that’s barbeque sauce!

Making a Healthier Barbeque Sauce…

When people want to use barbeque sauce they are faced with a very old dilemma – whether they should use store bought or prepare homemade sauce. As we have already mentioned, the taste of this sauce can determine whether the barbeque is successful or not. So, even though store bought sauce is the easy way to solve this dilemma, the truth is that homemade barbeque sauce is better. First and foremost, this sauce tastes fresher and better. In addition, you can prepare a sauce that will meet your personal requirements and tastes. You can use many different ingredients and make experiments. In addition, there are some great recipes for homemade barbeque sauce that are simple and easy to prepare. Finally, if you go for the homemade option, you will avoid the preservatives and sugar.

While we are talking about sugar, it is good to point out that the majority of BBQ sauces found in stores are packed with sugar and contain high fructose corn syrup. As we all know, increased intake of sugar leads to many health issues like increased chances of developing diabetes, high blood pressure and even cancer. Additionally, high sugar content in the body prevents proper absorption of nutrients. What is even worse is that people who consume more sugar than the daily recommended dose risk rapid weight gain and serious tooth decay. The situation is similar and worse when it comes to high fructose corn syrup. This syrup found in popular store bought BBQ sauces makes the food sweeter, but it also doesn’t provide a feeling of satiety which means that after a short period of time, you will probably experience food cravings. In addition, high fructose corn syrup also increases cholesterol levels and encourages weight gain. If there is too much unused sugar, it is automatically stored and over some time converted to cholesterol. The final result is weight gain and liver stress. Even the process of production of this syrup is dangerous because manufacturers use pesticides to grow corn crops, and most likely the crop used contains GMOs. There are chances that some of this syrup comes from organic corn, but these chances are slim.

What is Tamari?

Tamari sauce or simply tamari is one of the ingredients found in the tastiest homemade barbeque sauces. People often think that tamari is actually soy sauce, but they are wrong. Tamari is a sauce that originates from Japan. It is characterized by thick density; it is a less salty and healthier fermented soy sauce. In addition, this sauce is free of gluten. Even though it is traditionally used in Asian cuisines, the fact is that it can provide a full flavor to barbeque sauces too. So, it is the best idea to include tamari sauce as one of the ingredients of your homemade barbeque sauce unless you have an allergy to soy.
